Food waste is a major environmental, economic, and social issue. We’re wasting valuable resources and throwing away 40% of our food while hunger continues to be widespread. In 2017, the first Midwest Food Recovery Summit brought together 130+ attendees to focus on food waste reduction, recycling, and recovery and back by popular demand, we’re heading to Des Moines in 2018!

AD Projects: From Concept to Reality
As the demand for alternative organic disposal solutions continues to expand, Anaerobic Digester (AD) projects continue to expand and evolve as well. EcoEngineers will share its experience with AD technology implementation as a solution for food waste management. The session will outline the lifecycle of a project from conducting a wasteshed analysis and cash flow projections to feedstock acquisition, design and construction, initial site registration and ongoing compliance requirements. The advantages and disadvantages of various types of feedstock that serve as a potential source for renewable natural gas will be discussed. The session will place a spotlight on various financial drivers, including the Federal Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), administered by the US EPA and the Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) Program administered by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). Project development pitfalls and lessons learned will be shared from case studies involving municipal wastewater treatment plants, landfills and agricultural digesters. Projects examples will include regional digester projects in Dane County, Wisconsin and Des Moines, Iowa.
